Alternatives selectors are sceptical about the possibility of private markets index funds and ETFs, despite BlackRock suggesting its iShares products could enter this space.

Following BlackRock’s deal to buy Preqin in July, there’s been quite a bit of noise surrounding the potential use of index funds and ETFs for private markets.

At the time of the deal, BlackRock’s chief financial officer Martin Small said on an investor call that there could be a tie-up between iShares, BlackRock’s ETF arm, and the private markets data bought from Preqin.

‘In the long range... we have a great platform in iShares to be able to take some of this data, use it, and create investable indices through... things like exchange traded products,’ said Small, according to Reuters.
