Similar to how bland true melee weapons got overhauls in terms of visual weapon effects or new features but with older yoyos.
Aside from the Terrarian and the Hive-Five...yoyos are very underwhelming and little more than mid damaging sphere attached to a long string.

Think of what the EoC yoyo could've been...Spitting out homing eyes every couple seconds. Along with the Kraken, the Yelets feels like a chunk of bone on stings, Chik could stick sharp crystals into enemies like many other hallow weapons, etc. And all of the yoyos that you buy have no difference aside from a damage increase, range boost, or the smallest amount of extra duration.

I never find myself using yoyos for long even when I force myself into using them...they just don't have the advances and overhauls to keep up with every other melee variant.

We already know we're getting an upgraded Yoyo Bag called the Magic Yoyo Bag, which is pretty wild honestly considering how strong the Yoyo Bag is for yoyos. But even so, I agree that more of the yoyos in the game should have effects. I would like more variety of effects than just having projectiles, though.

For example the Kraken could have tentacles emerging from the ground

That's just an upgrade to the weapon type.
Having effects such as AOE auras or projectiles would make yoyos way more than just PHM ranged melee until you get NE components.

Amarok and Hel-Fire could have auras around the yoyo similar to the inferno potion's ring around the player.

Three pre-Hardmode yoyos ideas:

  • Malaise could create tinier versions of the Light's Bane effects that damage enemies
  • Artery could create tiny projectiles that inflict the Blood Butcherer debuff on enemies
  • Amazon could create tiny thorns that inflict the Poison debuff

Here, I'll do some.

  • Valor doesn't bounce off of enemies, allowing it to get more hits in
  • Chik leaves crystal shards stuck in enemies it hits, which could act similarly to the Daybreak (stacking, residual damage) although obviously weaker
  • Yelets leaves a trail of jungle vines that function like the Vilethorn. They do 1/3 the Yelets' damage each time they hit

Also, the Kraken deserves a major rework. Make it stronger, make it dropped by Duke Fishron, and make it spit out bubbles. A new yoyo could take its place in the Dungeon.

@TinkerCat @a far away planet 🪐🍉⭐️
I’m sold.
I had a similar idea to the chik in some other post awhile back.
The “Codes” and the ones sold by the bone merchant should probably be respited but stay the same otherwise.

perhaps add a few more to fill in some gaps in progression?
I rarely go melee and on those occasions I don't think I ever really used yo-yos, so I don't really know much in terms of what areas need filling in, but perhaps a gold/platinum yo-yo for pre-boss?

I also think the terrarian should get a rework. it's current effect is jut a bit too bland for what it is.

The flailron would still take all the spotlight.
But a AOE tornado around it or an occasional large, Damaging, bubble to spawn around it.
